Overseas Vietnamese will be exempt from visas for entering Vietnam, according to a new Government decision; instead they will be granted visa-free certificates valid for 5 years. The certificates will be handed out by either representative agencies in foreign countries or by the Ministry of Public Security’s Immigration Department. Vietnamese people that hold foreign passports and foreigners who are their wives, husbands and children are allowed to enter Vietnam without visa for less than 90 days. In order to be granted visa exemption certificates at Vietnamese representative offices abroad, overseas Vietnamese need conditions: * Foreign-issued permanent residence certificate (PRC) with the validity of at least six months since the date of entrance. * Visa exemption paper (VEP) is granted by Vietnamese appropriate authorities. Those who expect to stay more than 90 days must apply for visa according to current stipulations before their entrance.

There is no time frame required to apply for a visa in advance. Though it just takes 2-3 working days to get your visa approved, it is strongly advised to apply for a visa to Vietnam from 1 – 2 weeks in advance to avoid urgent fee and unwanted problems.

Only citizens of certain countries can visit Vietnam without Vietnam entry visa in a range of time and/or with certain conditions. Those are included: - Most citizens of ASEAN member countries (Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Philipines and Brunei) for visiting Vietnam within 30 days; - Citizens of Korea, Japan & Scandinavians (Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland passport holders) for visit Vietnam within 15 days. - Citizens of France holding valid diplomatic or official passports for travel less than 90 days or several visits within 6 months. - Citizens of Chile holding valid diplomatic or official passports for travel less than 60 days. - APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) Holders from Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member for travel less than 60 days.- Foreigners and Vietnamese bearing foreign passports who enter Vietnam through an international border gate and then travel to Phu Quoc Island and stay in Phu Quoc less than 15 days will also be exempt from Vietnam visa application. Passports must be valid for at least 45 days. After arriving to Phu Quoc Island, if visitors want to travel to other localities or stay in the island for more than 15 days, the immigration department will be responsible for issuing visas right on the spot. - No visa required for Vietnamese overseas less than 90days stay if holding Vietnam visa exemption certificate. All other citizens are required to get Vietnam entry visa before departure (Vietnam visa issued prior to departure by Vietnamese consulates or embassies) or a pre-approved Vietnam entry visa (visa is issued on arrival at Vietnam’s International Airports) supplied before arrival in Vietnam.
